These blood collection tubes are generally used for whole blood Haematology tests, EDTA K3, when used as a anticoagulant, has minimal impact on red and white blood cells. Thus it is widely used in whole blood examination.
Outline
EDTA binds the calcium ions and therefore blocks the coagulation cascade. Erythrocytes, leucocytes and thrombocytes in an EDTA anticoagulated blood sample are stable for up to 24 hours. Mixing recommendation: Heparin tubes should be gently inverted 180 and back 8-10 times. EDTA K2 gel tubes are for the examination of EDTA plasma for molecular diagnostics and for viral load determinations.
